The Stranglers are probably best known for their punk rock beginnings with their famous songs such as No More Heroes and Peaches. These were exciting songs to listen to regardless of critics' analysis of their technical merits. The basis of punk seemed to be to not belong or fit, and indeed their peers did not consider them to be a true punk band which probably suited them.

They were originally called The Guildford Stranglers" allegedly for a notorious early 70's South London multiple murderer. This was too offensive, even for The Stranglers, and not commercially viable especially as they played most of their early gigs in South London where the murderer had still not been caught.

Their genre extended from punk into gothic rock and new wave music in the 1980s.

They started a world tour in 2012 and their UK leg commences/commenced in March 2013
