Did You Know?

  • Ray Charles “music is nothing separate from me. It is me. I can’t retire from music any more than I can retire from my liver”
  • Ray Charles had one rule in his life, the rule of three no’s (referring to his blindness): “No dog, no cane, [no guitar].”

Ray Charles was a singer, composer and musician. He preferred to be called "Brother Ray" although he was often called "The Genius" or "The Genius of Soul".

Although he was blind from the age of just 7, he was keen on playing music and was taught classical piano. His teacher used braille - reading by touch. A complexity for blind people is that this means feeling with one hand the notes you need to play in the other - and then swapping round.

Charles collaborated with, and respected, the best in the industry, citing Nat King Cole as a primary influence. He also loved jazz, country, jazz, blues, and rhythm and blues artists of including Louis Jordan and Charles Brown. He later became friends with Quincy Jones

Frank Sinatra said of him that he was "the only true genius in show business"
