Did You Know?

  • Jimmy Cliff is the only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest arts honour granted by the Jamaican government
  • Jimmy Cliff's Father wanted him to sing church songs but he loved calypso. He didn't let him hear Water the Garden it's about sex

Jimmy Cliff has produced sone wonderful ska and reggae records including "I Can See Clearly Now", "The Harder They Come" and the haunting "Man Rivers to Cross". He was granted the Jamaican Order of Merit for his contribution to Arts and Sciences and holds the distinction of being the only living musician to have this prestigious award. It is the highest award that the Jamaican government can give.

As a teenager, I used to fish at Aldenham Reservoir, England and would often be singing "I Can See Clearly Now" following the all too frequent rain showers. The song was used to the opening sequence of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May first series on Amazon Prime: The Grand Tour. It depicts Clarkson being less than ceremonially dumped from his old job at the BBC on a grey, rainy day. Clarkson is seen getting into his Ford Mustang and gradually the skies clear and he finds sun, the open road and a big smile as he is joined by Hammond and May. They all drive Mustangs: One white, one red and, of course, one blue. It's a tremendous choice of song for that sequence.
