From the opening track Stronger Than Me, Winehouse's rich, gospel influenced vocals grab your attention with their accomplished phrasing and soulful expressiveness. Her ability to seamlessly flit between playful scat singing and guttural, emotionally-raw deliveries was already fully formed.

The musicality shines through the terrific backing band comprised of seasoned jazz musicians. On songs like You Sent Me Flying and Moody's Mood for Love their tight yet loose grooves allow Winehouse's vocals to effortlessly ride the walking bass lines and swinging drumbeats. The lively jazz/funk instrumentation, with punchy horns and dexterous guitar work, keeps things fresh and contemporary alongside the vintage vibes.

The album's stylistic versatility is impressive, from the sultry torch song stylings of In My Bed to the up-tempo doo-wop inspired Take the Box. Yet it all hangs together through Winehouse's differentiated yet distinctive vocal approach on each track. Her skill in mixing melismatic vocal runs with clipped, rhythmic phrasing is a treat throughout.
