The Ben Folds Five actually consisted of 3 people: Ben Folds on piano, Robert sledge on bass (and backing vocals) and Darren Jesse on Drums (and backing vocals). Being a piano trio Ben Folds pulled off the incredible trick of being one of the leading Alternative Rock artists, without having a guitar in his band. This allowed the bass guitar (rather than a guitar) to use a distortion pedal - Robert Sledge used the classic Big Muff Pi to get his distinctive sound.
